Every year in March the city of Valencia is on Fire for one week.
Literally.
Not like it's burning down of course, but it bursts with fireworks from every corner, kids set off firecrackers in the streets, there is Mascleta a firecracker show every afternoon and on the final day the Fallas, huge paper maché figures are burned down. It is quite the experience to be in Valencia for this festival they call “Las Fallas” and AEGEE Valencia invited us to show us their fascinating culture by organising a European Event.
It was my first European Event and I was nervous to see how it would turn out. I was told AEGEE Valencia has been organizing this event for 5 years now, so they know how to organize it well, which reassured me a little and I can only pass this on: if you ever think of joining the Valencia on fire event, it’s a great start into European Events!
Me and 4 other people got to Valencia a day before the Event startet and we were hosted by a very cool member of AEGEE Valencia in his apartment that night, before transferring to a Gym in the small town of Albal with the rest of the arriving pax one day later. We slept in a comfy Judo Gym layed out with matts and spent a lot of time in Albal playing team building games, having workshops (on the history of Valencia and Fallas, on how to make Orchata, etc.) and of course for European Night! A must for every European Event! This European night included another workshop of how to make agua de valencia, an orange juice, wine, and vodka mix typical to their region. We even had an audience with the mayor of Albal who welcomed us “young Europeans” to their city and gave each of us one of the traditional blue and white plaided scarfs (mocador faller).
But of course the main attraction was Las Fallas. We took the train into Valencia almost every day to experience the fire crackers, see the Fallas statues, to watch the parades of falleros marching through the streets, and the crazy fire spitting correfoc, eat buñelos and paella and drink Orchata and Sangria. We also had a fabulous city tour by two very cool and knowledgeable history students from AEGEE Valencia as guides. We got to see the museum of science and the aquarium (of course we had to take a picture with the penguins!!) and went out to street parties (verbenas) every night.
I had such a fun time, met so many really cool people and experienced the city of Valencia in its crazy week on fire!!!
